U.S. Tea Importer Approved as Canadian Organic Supplier

Teas Etc Inc. a Florida-based importer of specialty teas received Canadian Organic Certification Equivalency in late November. The company's organic certifying agency, Quality Certification Services (QCS), conducted Teas Etc' annual inspection and, in accordance with the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) rule, granted Canadian General Services Board (CGSB) certified supplier status. The 11-year-old company became USDA certified organic in 2007 and has added numerous organic selections to an already well established product offering.

"We serve a number of quality tea companies and retailers in Canada," said Beth Johnston, Teas Etc Founder and CEO, "it seemed imperative to offer them the benefit of an organic option, especially knowing how important organics are to Canadian consumers." A survey of Canadian urban consumers conducted by the Organic Trade Association (OTA) and the Canadian Organic Growers (COG) indicated that an "impressive 57 % of all respondents make between 50-100 % of their total purchases in organic products," with the majority of respondents indicating "family health" as their primary concern when purchasing organics.

When asked what Teas Etc is doing to further promote education and the benefits of buying organic tea she replied: "we continue to reach out to other suppliers and retailers to aid in furthering their understanding of NOP requirements and what's involved in buying and packaging organic products and obtaining certified organic status. It is important for consumers to have access to organic teas; but it is even more critical that the teas that are labeled organic meet NOP organic standards. Building an industry that is well educated and committed to the proper handling of organic teas and subsequent certification will increase consumer confidence and drive sales, ultimately boosting the value of the specialty tea industry and its place as a competent segment of North America's organic food trade."

Johnston will once again be presenting the class A Road Map to Organic Certification at the 2010 World Tea Expo, North America's largest tea only trade show, taking place in Las Vegas, June 11th – 13th at the Convention Center.

Teas Etc Inc. is the only female owned company with winners in the 2008 and 2009 World Tea Championship, Hot Tea Category. The company is a leading supplier of specialty teas and herbs with a showroom in Atlanta, a satellite office in Nanjing, China and its home base in Florida.
